Urban Wing Chun

Wing Chun is a Chinese martial art developed around 300 years ago during the Qing Dynasty by Buddhist Nun Ng Mui, who combined Shaolin techniques with observations from animal fights (like a crane and snake) to create an efficient, non-reliant-on-strength system. It was named after her student, Yim Wing Chun, who used it to defend herself. The art was later refined and popularized globally by figures like Ip Man, who brought it to Hong Kong and taught Bruce Lee, emphasizing close-range combat, precision, and natural body mechanics.

The History of Urban Wing Chun

2008

Urban Wing Chun Kung Fu school was started by Master Peter Mogridge in 2008. Pete had trained with Samuel Kwok who was directly linked to Ip Man himself through his sons and the wider Wing Chun community. You can't get much closer to the source of Wing Chun that that!

The club used 2 spaces at the time; the National Badminton Centre in Milton Keynes and the Ellen Pettit Memorial Hall in Woburn.

2017

Jon organised and held a Meeting of the Masters Workshop to raise funds for long-standing club member Karol Komorski, who was undergoing treatment for cancer. The seminar was a great success, including workshops from many Kung Fu masters and raising lots of money.

2015

The club moved from using 2 spaces to one purpose-made gym (Kwoon) at The Farm in Wood End, Marston Mortaine. The current space is a well-equipped training space, but was once an old pig sty! Jon, JM and the team all pitched in to clear the old barn out and make it into the bespoke space it is today.

2020

The club was officially taken over by Jon and JM in 2020 during the COVID lockdowns. As for most people, 2020 was a difficult year which saw numbers attending the club decline. However, Jon & JM have been rebuilding the club since taking ownership and Urban Wing Chun is now going from strength to strength!

2024

The Great Flood of 2024!

After heavy rain in the winter of 2024, the club had to close for a few days to deal with the resulting flooding in the Kwoon. The team chipped in to get rid of the water and open again as soon as possible.
